Black History Month – Health & Fitness Achievements Pt. V

Today we close our 2013 celebration of Black History Month, recognizing individuals making strides in health and fitness. This week, we highlight Black Girls RUN! (BGR) and founders Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks. The duo started BGR in 2009, with a mission “to encourage African-American women to make fitness and healthy living a priority.” Since then, BGR has become a national movement, growing over 150% in 2012 and receiving much-deserved attention from the media. BGR is helping African-American women tackle obesity, form new friendships and strengthen communities by providing running and support groups in over 30 states and growing. Black Girls RUN! is currently on a nationwide ‘Preserve the Sexy Tour’, sponsored by ESSENCE. Check out for more information on BGR groups and events.

Ilen & Lauren Bell are the husband and wife team behind Black Fitness Today, born, in 2011, out of their motivation to change culture, build a platform and lead the charge. Their purpose is to help change the culture towards health and fitness in the African-American community, showcase those who are making an impact, and promote healthier living. They also aim to serve as a platform for African-American fitness and health professionals and enthusiasts who are otherwise overlooked in traditional fitness media.
