This month’s “Life Changers” spotlight features Certified Fitness Trainer and Sports Specific Coach, Bryan Charles. The Cincinnati Tri-State Area trainer discussed his personal health and fitness journey, helping others live a healthier lifestyle and how he maintains a work-life balance between managing and serving as head trainer at Paradise Gym, which has produced some of the strongest Natural Athlete Strength Association (NASA) powerlifting competitors in Ohio for over 20 years.
Q. What was your life like before you created a career in Health & Fitness?
A. Before a career in health and fitness, I was working third shift at a valet job in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, while balancing class during the day as a student majoring in Health Promotion and Education at the University of Cincinnati. Balancing work, studying and an active lifestyle were difficult at first, but I believe that by staying strong and working hard, you can accomplish your goals and exceed your own expectations.
Q. What motivated you to become a personal trainer & what do you enjoy most about it?
A. When I would return home to Cleveland, OH on holiday breaks, I would get a lot of questions from friends and family about fitness. When people started asking questions at the gym, or sending me emails and Facebook messages about wanting to workout with me, or requesting workout plans, I then realized that becoming a fitness professional was my calling.
The best part of working with clients on a daily basis is helping them reach their fitness goals through the good and tough days. Helping clients realize that it is a process and a learning experience and watching them progress is a great feeling. Hearing positive feedback about how happy they are and how they exceeded their own expectations are many of the things I love about being a personal trainer.
Q. How are you able to maintain your work-life balance and what advice would you give to readers on how they can achieve theirs?
A. I like to take it one day at a time, and make sure I am very organized and on top of my schedule. I am considered by many as a “work-a-holic,” and my schedule can get tough to manage at times, but I truly love what I do. Working hard is important, but taking time out for yourself and enjoying life is also important. Don’t let life pass you by because you’re always working. Prioritize your time and include some down time in your schedule. Even a little bit of relaxation goes a long way.
Q. What is your current training regimen?
A. I’m currently doing a “bulking phase” which is an 8-10 week program lifting heavy weights to build strength and muscle, before cutting down to prepare for the summer. I like to wake up at 4am to get ready for my own personal workout at 5am, then after my day with clients is over, I work out again later that evening.
Q. What advice do you have for someone looking to live a healthier lifestyle?
A. I really wish people would take advantage of the time they have to live a healthy lifestyle. I hear so many excuses for not working out and going to the doctor on a regular basis. I am saddened that so many individuals disregard their health as if it is not our most important gift, only for it to be important once we lose control of it. We must have the desire to change first. It won’t be easy but remaining consistent and taking it one day at a time will help us reach our goals to and live a healthier lifestyle.
