Today we close our 2013 celebration of Black History Month, recognizing individuals making strides in health and fitness. This week, we highlight Black Girls RUN! (BGR) and founders Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks. The duo started BGR in 2009, with a mission “to encourage African-American women to make fitness and healthy living a priority.” Since then, BGR has become a national movement, growing over 150% in 2012 and receiving much-deserved attention from the media. BGR is helping African-American women tackle obesity, form new friendships and strengthen communities by providing running and support groups in over 30 states and growing. Black Girls RUN! is currently on a nationwide ‘Preserve the Sexy Tour’, sponsored by ESSENCE. Check out BlackGirlsRUN.com for more information on BGR groups and events.
